AI can support individualized education, students with disabilities, first\u00a0\u00a0 language learning, curricula development and school-level administrative tasks. However, AI can also perpetuate pre-existing structural inequalities and bias in school systems, widen the digital divide and, in particular for minors, create privacy concerns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Recognizing these potential risks and rewards, the African Union\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/44004-doc-EN-_Continental_AI_Strategy_July_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy<\/a>\u00a0identifies education as one of the priority sectors for AI expansion. The strategy calls for more knowledge about AI use cases, policies and competency frameworks in education and more sharing of evidence-based successful practices. IDRC-supported work aligns with that call through partnerships like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ai4d.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artificial Intelligence for Development<\/a>\u00a0(AI4D), the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX) and Centre investments in educational technology (Edtech) capacity-building.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--heading paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-text field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\">Harnessing responsible AI for education<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden\">\r\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Media<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field__item\">\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/idrc-crdi.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/AI%20in%20education%20in%20Africa_01.JPG?itok=l9jCsPW8\" alt=\"Reading AI-translated storybook in local language\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/AI%20in%20education%20in%20Africa_01.JPG?itok=l9jCsPW8\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-credit field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">RobotsMali<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-caption field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">Using AI, RobotsMali translated culturally-relevant story books into local languages for rural children at a fraction of the cost of traditional publishing<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text-block paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">AI4D has supported the development of innovative, responsible AI-enabled assistive technologies for learners with physical disabilities. A tool developed by Kenya\u2019s Maseno University in collaboration with deaf communities translates between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/385937123_LEVERAGING_ARTIFICIAL_INTELLIGENCE_FOR_KENYAN_SIGN_LANGUAGE_PRODUCTION_TO_SUPPORT_DEAF_LEARNERS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English and Kenyan sign language<\/a>\u00a0to facilitate communication between deaf students and their peers and teachers in mainstream schools. Several other supported projects leverage machine translation and text-to-speech technologies to make educational content in English, French and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eduaihub.org\/design-and-implementation-of-amharic-text-to-speech-system-for-visual-impaired-and-blind-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local languages<\/a>\u00a0more accessible for neurodiverse learners and learners with visual impairments.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden\">\r\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Media<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field__item\">\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/idrc-crdi.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/AI%20in%20education%20in%20Africa_02.jpg?itok=bb4LR_XL\" alt=\"A man in front of a classroom giving a presentation \" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/AI%20in%20education%20in%20Africa_02.jpg?itok=bb4LR_XL\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-credit field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">Maseno University<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-caption field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">A presentation of how AI4D experts at Kenya\u2019s Maseno University developed n AI-enabled assistive technology for learners with physical disabilities.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text-block paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cariboudigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/cases_responsibleAI4D_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RobotsMali<\/a>, an IDRC-supported educational non-profit organization in Mali, used a combination of ChatGPT, machine translation and human editors to produce over 180 culturally relevant children\u2019s books in less than a year in Bambara, a local Malian language. The organization estimates that its production costs were a fraction of what they would have been had they used other methods to create the books. They represent a first step in promoting literacy in Bambara and preserving the traditional language.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Similarly, the GPE KIX project,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpekix.org\/project\/science-technology-engineering-and-mathematics-stem-teacher-and-student-education-primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Teacher and student education for Primary Schools<\/a>, combined open educational resources and AI in the development of high-quality, culturally relevant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/steps.nextgenu.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science textbooks<\/a>\u00a0for primary school in Benin, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. AI tools assisted in drafting initial content based on each country\u2019s curriculum requirements, suggested culturally relevant examples and contexts, and aided in the translation and localization of materials.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The true potential of these educational innovations will not be fulfilled without the proper implementation of AI-enabled tools into education systems, starting with the essential step of educating policymakers and decision-makers on both the risks and potential benefits of using AI. Africa\u2019s Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy recognizes that if AI is to be widely adopted in education in Africa, national AI competency initiatives for teachers and students are critical.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"text-align-justify\">From innovation to implementation\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">As part of AI4D, the Senegal-based advocacy firm Niyel has been working with governments in francophone Africa to deepen parliamentarians\u2019 understanding of AI and responsible AI policies. In October 2024, following the launch of a French-language guide for policymakers in AI and education as well as UNESCO\u2019s AI Competency Framework for Students, GPE\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kixafrique21.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KIX Africa 21 Hub<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/ai-competency-framework-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO<\/a>\u00a0hosted a two-day seminar in Senegal on that challenge. Ministers of education and representatives from 25 francophone and lusophone African countries attended the event. Professor Mamadou Kaba Traor\u00e9, deputy director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ims-bordeaux.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integration from Material to System (IMS) lab<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Bordeaux in France, led workshops designed to help country representatives develop AI competency frameworks tailored to their needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">\u201c[S]kills repositories are highly relevant tools for drawing up an inventory of required skills that educational strategies can be based on, and for assessing strengths and needs to define required training initiatives,\u201d Traor\u00e9 explained. \u201cHowever, difficulties remain in properly identifying these skills, as well as in structuring a rational process for implementing reference systems from their conception to their operationalization in training programs.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Country representatives made a strong commitment to addressing the challenges associated with developing and operationalizing national AI skills repositories, with a focus on collaboration and synergy between countries.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden\">\r\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Media<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field__item\">\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/idrc-crdi.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/Education%20and%20AI_RIA_02.jpg?itok=gY4EQqxP\" alt=\"Teacher with students and computers in Kenya \" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/default_image_large\/public\/2025-05\/Education%20and%20AI_RIA_02.jpg?itok=gY4EQqxP\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-credit field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">IDRC \/ Sven Torffin<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image-caption field--type-text field--label-hidden field__item\">IDRC has been investing in digital education research for international development since the 2000s<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text-block paragraph--view-mode--default\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\r\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The focus on skills and capacity strengthening aligns with IDRC\u2019s most recent investment in educational technologies through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/idrc-crdi.ca\/en\/initiative\/empowered-technology-inclusive-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EmpowerED<\/a>\u00a0initiative. EmpowerED will support Southern ministries of education to identify their learning needs, improve their capacities to generate and use AI innovations and Edtech-related evidence and help support the development of AI and Edtech-enabling policies. Recognizing the context-specific challenges of widespread Edtech use, EmpowerED operates through three regional initiatives led by local partner organizations in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. These regional networks of research institutions will leverage policy opportunities and existing capacity within specific countries, ensuring impact and policy buy-in.
